Lucerne itself — worth your time

Most visitors treat Lucerne as a transit point on the way to a mountain. That is a mistake. Allow 2–3 hours for the city.

What to see in Lucerne

  • Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) — the most-photographed bridge in Switzerland. 14th century, covered wooden footbridge with paintings inside. Allow 15–20 minutes.
  • Old Town (Altstadt) — painted building facades, fountain squares, car-free laneways. Very compact and walkable.
  • Lion Monument — a sculpted dying lion carved into a cliff face. Mark Twain called it "the saddest and most moving piece of rock in the world."
  • Lake Lucerne promenade — walk along the waterfront with mountain views reflecting in the water. Best in early morning.
  • KKL Luzern — the striking lake-side concert hall designed by Jean Nouvel. Worth seeing even from the outside.
