The Golden Round Trip

The Pilatus Golden Round Trip is a circular journey combining three distinct transport modes — no backtracking, no repeated scenery. It is genuinely well-designed and one of the reasons it is so popular with first-time visitors to Lucerne:

  1. Lake cruise from Lucerne pier across Lake Lucerne to Alpnachstad (~1 hour)
  2. World's steepest cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad to Pilatus Kulm summit (~30 minutes, 48° gradient)
  3. Time at the summit — two observation peaks (Esel and Tomlishorn), restaurants, walking paths
  4. Gondola descent from Pilatus Kulm down to Kriens (~30 minutes)
  5. Bus or tram back to Lucerne city centre (~10 minutes)
⚠️

Seasonal note — cogwheel railway only runs May to November

The cogwheel railway section (Alpnachstad to summit) is closed in winter due to snow. In winter, you can still reach the summit via the aerial gondola from Kriens, but the full Golden Round Trip requires the cogwheel railway — so plan for May–November.

The summit experience

The Pilatus summit at 2,132m is significantly lower than Jungfraujoch or Titlis, which means the altitude is comfortable for almost everyone including young children. The views, however, are remarkable — on a clear day you can see over 73 Alpine peaks from the observation platforms.

  • Esel observation peak — the main observation point with 360° views
  • Tomlishorn — a short ridge walk from Esel, slightly higher and often less crowded
  • Dragon's Path — a themed walking path around the summit (Pilatus has a legendary connection to a dragon)
  • Summit restaurants — Hotel Pilatus-Kulm has a restaurant with full panoramic windows. Reasonably priced for a mountain summit.

Practical information

  • Duration: The full Golden Round Trip takes 5–7 hours including time at the summit.
  • Start time: First lake cruise typically departs around 8:30–9:00am from Lucerne pier. Starting early means fewer crowds at the summit.
  • What to wear: Comfortable walking shoes. A jacket for the summit even in summer — temperatures can be 10–15°C cooler than Lucerne below.
  • Season: May to November for the full round trip. December to April: gondola only (no cogwheel railway).
  • Getting to Lucerne: Direct train from Zurich (~55 minutes). The lake cruise pier is a 5-minute walk from Lucerne station.

Allow time for Lucerne city

Lucerne deserves at least 1–2 hours on its own. The Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), one of the oldest wooden bridges in Europe, the old town, the Lion Monument and the lakefront promenade are all within easy walking distance of the station. Many visitors combine a morning in Lucerne with the afternoon Pilatus trip.
