Milan to the Swiss Alps โ€” what is actually possible

From Milan, you cannot easily reach Jungfraujoch or Mount Titlis in a day. The logistics do not work. But what you can reach โ€” beautifully, comfortably, in a single day โ€” is the Bernina Pass. And the journey there is one of the greatest train rides in the world.

The Bernina Red Train departs from Tirano (reachable in 2h from Milan by rail + local train via Como) and crosses the Bernina Pass into St. Moritz. It is a UNESCO World Heritage railway โ€” the same status as the Colosseum or the Taj Mahal. The journey takes around 2.5 hours and the windows face mountains, glaciers, viaducts and villages the entire way.

The honest best recommendation from Milan

The Bernina Red Train day trip from Milan is the best-value, most scenic, most memorable thing you can do with one free day in Milan. The journey itself is the destination โ€” and St. Moritz gives you time to explore one of Switzerland's most famous resort towns.

The star of the show

The Bernina Red Train

The Bernina Express โ€” operated by Rhaetian Railway โ€” is one of the most spectacular rail journeys on the planet. It crosses 196 bridges and 55 tunnels, climbs 1,824 metres in altitude without a single rack-and-pinion section, and passes through a landscape that changes from palm trees in Tirano to glaciers at the Bernina Pass.

The panoramic coaches have large windows that angle upward so you can see the peaks above as well as the valleys below. The Landwasser Viaduct โ€” a curved six-arch stone viaduct that appears to hover impossibly over a gorge โ€” has become one of Switzerland's most photographed sights.
